154 DARREM CHARLES (1969- ) B ased in Miami but born in Arouca, Darrem Charles rose to become one of the world’s leading bodybuilders placing in the top three in world class competitions between 1989 and 2009. H. A. CLARKE (1910-1999) H ilton Alfonso Clarke was T&T’s biggest boxing promoter between 1950 and the late 1980’s. As a younger man he used to box but it was in the field of promoting boxing fights that he made his mark. He arranged for the visit of Muhammad Ali to T&T in August 1971; Ali gave an exhibition boxing match at the Queen’s Park Oval on August 22 nd as did Sugar Ray Robinson in the 1950’s. In 1980 he was awarded the Medal of Merit Silver. LEARIE NICHOLAS “CONNIE” CONSTANTINE (1901-1971) S ir Learie ConstantinewasWest Indies’andTrinidad andTobago’s first global cricket superstar, a lawyer, politician, statesman, diplomat, high commissioner, BBC Commentator, author, lecturer, knight, MBE, baron, and Lord. As a right-handed batsman and fast bowler, he became one of the biggest attractions in the history of the game as one of the greatest all rounders.
